Young dreamers burst out of the ground with great zeal, boldly reaching toward the light.
The survival rate is depressingly low.

Those lucky enough to mature have some fortunate adaptation that renders them somehow more fit than the others.

In humans, for instance, a developed pre-frontal cortex capable of making long-sighted choices, or hedging one's bets to accommodate the empirical data, coupled with a primitive brain that disregards this data, and therefore supplies the courage to go on, moment by moment, is a useful trait.

I can only hope this will mitigate the die-off.
