Something that has been bothering me:

heavy-handedness.

bear with me as i launch into another seemingly out of left field analogy...if you read it through and think about it (okay, and if you're me), i swear it will make sense.

i'm thinking of my old car (oh dora the explorer, you're the best, even if- no wait, in fact, especially because- you are STILL in my mom and dad's driveway in the town formerly known as elkhorn, chugging along with 180,000 miles of history to your credit...but that is another tangent, which i am going to resist pursuing at this time, in order to demonstrate that i do make some attempt to control my propensity for wandering, rambling offshoots), where there are two ways to change the channel on the radio. you can either press "seek," whereupon the radio automatically jumps to the next fairly easily accessible frequency, or you can use the "tune" button and manually zero in on the station you want. Obviously, it saves time and effort to just "seek", but the thing is, a lot of times seeking either (a) lands you on a frequency close to the one you want, but not quite there, or (b) skips really great stations altogether. In case (a), the situation can be remedied with a little extra tuning, and as long as you take this extra step, all is well, but in case (B) you're kinda of out of luck- you just miss out on a really good option.

Or it's like the coarse focus and fine focus on a microscope. By messing around with the coarse focus a bit, you can pretty easily zero in on one position that is much obviously clearer than any other. With that adjustment, you can generally sort of see...well, something, at least, and usually something you can sort of convince yourself is what you want to see...but in order to really see what's there, you have to spend a few moments really carefully adjusting the fine focus...
